2nd Day of Our Expedition
Waking up after
night with a somewhat questionable sleep, we campers started off the day with a
full bottle of water and a splendid breakfast of bacon and scrambled eggs. With
our day bags packed and our canoes fastened to the trailer, we were ready to
take our first long journey on the river. After a couple interviews with local
news stations and Dominion we headed out onto the mighty James River.
After leaving Iron Gate Boat Landing, we found ourselves in many rapids. Soon enough, we stopped in an eddy to take out our lunch of – you guessed it – flour tortillas. After the well-earned meal, we
left the beach to continue our journey.
As we
reached the halfway mark, we came across a class 2 rapid that took courage and
training to accomplish. Luckily, everyone in our group made the rapid without
flipping, tipping, or losing gear. With the rest of the stretch of river consisting of only class 1
rapids and straight-aways, the end of the first actual river trip was coming to
an end as we landed back at the Gala Campground.
For the rest of the day, we
cooked hamburgers and corn on the cob and then receded into our daily circle to discuss
our topic of the day, which was: who inspires us the most. After that, we lit our campfire, roasting marshmallows and making s’mores being our top priority. Tomorrow we
finally start down the James (farther than Gala Campground) and really begin our expedition.
