DAY 7
July 13, 2012
Our camp site at Seven Islands, which was on the National Register of historic places in Virginia, was
a beautiful place. In additioin to our cooks preparing a mean cuisine of pesto pasta with
grilled chicken and a choice of salad.,Gabe and Laura, our land support,
surprised us with smores last night. We had an
extremely early wakeup call at around 6 A.M. Outside the tents it was chilly and cloudy. After
a quick breakfast of bagels, we were able to get on the river 20 minutes ahead
of schedule. While most of us had a
short relaxing batteau ride, others soloed canoes down to New Canton. We hiked
about a mile and a half to Dominion’s Bear Garden generating facility, which
just opened in 2011. Our sponsors over at Dominion were kind enough to give us
a tour of their Combined Cycle power generating plant that uses both natural
gas and diesel. As well as the tour, we were lucky enough to get a presentation
on how the plant operates and their environmental controls. We learned that
their natural gas plant is twice as efficient as their coal burning plant. We were ecstatic when the manager showed us a
room full of glorious pizza and two whole coolers of soda. The machinery at Bear Garden
was amazing.
Overall this
experience at the plant was enlightening and informative. After the tour we hiked back to the boat
launch and set off in canoes. We canoed about 11 miles to our next destination
at Elk Island. Tonight, we look forward to a Friday Fiesta dinner to celebrate
our last night together. Most of us
can’t believe we are already heading home tommorow. No one wants to leave the James yet.
